READING ICON FOR JANUARY: Ms. Nancy Hira Lim, Instructor from the English Department

Our Reading Icon for January 2018 is Ms. Nancy Hira Lim, a long time instructor from the English Department of the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Valenzuela. She teaches Literature Research, World Literature, Philippine Literature, and Developmental Reading, just to name a few.

One of her students mentioned that, "Miss Nancy prefers dealing with the classics. She is into books that never go out of style and she does not just settle on the literal level when reading or discussing. She probes in deeper, reading between the lines, and ponders about questions that could never be answered without reasonable wit. The classics never get old because it always reflects the society. Miss Nancy takes this as an advantage to relate the stories to her students in the class and makes it as a springboard for an exchange of ideas during discussions."

Ms. Nancy Hira says that, "I was introduced to reading through my father during my intermediate grade in elementary, where we will sneak reading Precious Hearts Romances then share laughter and tears over a story that has been read, away from the prying eyes of my mother. My father bought me my first two English novels from a certain garage sale, and there is where my book hoarding started.
In high school, my best friend shared her WITCH comics whenever she's too busy reading one, and reading has become part of my company. From here, I had the fascination of being immersed on the stories of other worlds that permitted me to travel non-stop. I fought with Dementors through Harry Potter, I felt the coldness of Narnia, I traveled with Frodo to destroy the Ring, I victor alongside Katniss Everdeen and a lot of fictional heroes like Percy Jackson and Jason Grace.

Reading as a requirement was never dull, I was introduced to classics which store treasures of the early times yet its timeliness and timelessness never waver. I explored the stories of the past, of the developing countries without limit. All I need is a good book on my hands. I collected virtues and words that will be forever with me.

All these years of reading, I have accepted the fact that there are still numerous worlds to be discovered and that I do with my students, as we travel together. Because for me, reading does not only liberate the mind, but it also liberates the soul."

Check out her personal book collection on display at the PLV Library which includes Paper Towns, The Alchemist, Like Water for Chocolate, The Lost Hero, and The Lightning Thief. Get the chance to read what she reads.
