#ReadingIcon for August-September 2019: Dr. Joselito Delos Reyes of Barangay Coloong, Valenzuela City


Meet our Reading Icon from August - September 2019, Dr. Joselito D. Delos Reyes. Also known as Sir Joey to many, Dr. Reyes was awarded with the Dr. Pio Valenzuela Memorial Awards for Journalism and Literature in 2003. Read his full length bionote below: 
Dr. Joselito Delos Reyes is our Reading Icon for August-September 2019.
JOSELITO D. DE LOS REYES of Barangay Coloong is currently a resident fellow of the University of Santo Tomas Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies and a research fellow of the Research Center for Culture, Arts and Humanities of the same university. He has a BSE Social Science degree from Philippine Normal University. He obtained his master’s and doctorate degrees in Philippine Studies from De La Salle University where his final research project was given an Outstanding Dissertation Award.

He is the author of PAUBAYA (UST Publishing House, 2014), TROYA: 12 KUWENTO (Visprint, Inc. 2016), two National Book Award-winning collections of essays about social media: iSTATUS NATION  (Visprint, Inc. 2014) and TITSER PANGKALAWAKAN (Visprint, Inc. 2015), and numerous literary translations including the timeless novel ANG METAMORPOSIS of Franz Kafka. His latest book is FINDING TEO: TULA/TALAMBUHAY (UST Publishing House, 2018), a popular biography of esteemed poet, Teo Antonio. His upcoming books include a collection of humorous travel essays and his musings as an academic and columnist for several media platforms.

A sought after speaker about creative writing, social media dynamics and new media platforms here and abroad, De Los Reyes has won several awards and citations from the National Book Development Board of the Philippines, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts Writers Prize for Short Fiction, the Maningning Miclat Awards for Poetry, the Dangal ng UST Outstanding Artist award, and the 2003 Dr. Pio Valenzuela Memorial Awards for Journalism and Literature.

He is a regular popular culture opinion contributor for GMA News Online, Abante, Philippines Graphic Magazine, and Rappler. He is the 2013 Makata ng Taon (Poet of the Year), an award given by the Commission on Filipino Language. He is a member of LIRA, UMPIL, Museo Valenzuela Foundation, and Lucban Historical Society. He is a board member of Philippine Center of International PEN.

He is one of the concept creators of primetime GMA News teleserye election special TODA One I love.

He teaches creative writing, research, popular culture, and seminar in new media at the UST Department of Literature and the UST Graduate School.

In celebration of Dr. Pio Valenzuela's 150th birth anniversary, the Reading Icon Book Sharing Program of PLV Library will be featuring successful Valenzuelanos who are awarded with the Dr. Pio Valenzuela Awards. Gawad Pio Valenzuela is the highest and most prestigious distinction given by Valenzuela City to exceptional Valenzuelanos who excel in their respective field and lived true to the values of the hero, Dr. Pio Valenzuela.
