READING ICON FOR JULY 2018: Teacher Mary Rose Lagunsad

Let us welcome Teacher Mary Rose Lagunsad as the Reading Icon for July 2018!

Teacher Mary Rose Lagunsad
Mary Rose A. Lagunsad is one of the NCR Coordinators and Workshop Trainers/Facilitators of Pinoy Reading Buddies. She took her Bachelors Degree in Elementary Education with Specialization in Early Childhood Education from the New Era University.

She juggled her roles as a mom, wife, PNU MA Ed Special Education student, bibliophile & Academic Coordinator of Montessori Academy of Valenzuela, where she taught in their Elementary and High School Departments from 2002 to 2012.

Teacher Marose, as she is fondly called, answered her calling to serve the underprivileged in 2012. She became a Kindergarten teacher from 2012 to 2017, a Grade 5 English and Filipino teacher last school year & at present a Grade 2 Teacher at Bitik Elementary School, the 1st Public school in Valenzuela City to become a PRB partner school.

She was a former Member and Parallel Session Speaker of the Reading Association of the Philippines, a Museo Pambata & Move Philippines Volunteer. She has also recently founded an advocacy support group for Reading and Literacy Program Initiatives, called Project B.E.A. R., to encourage and bring together all sectors of the community to work hand in hand towards building a nation of engaged and critical-minded Filipinos.

She has facilitated Pinoy Reading Buddies Program Training Workshops for Teachers in Valenzuela City, Manila, Kalookan City, Quezon City, Mandaluyong City, Malabon City and Dasmariñas, Cavite.

Mam Lagunsad was a struggling reader in her primary years and was able to fully grasp the written word after Remedial classes and self-initiated picture reading. She then became a bibliophile and would spend most of her time at school libraries and later on, even at special libraries in Metro Manila. She was already exposed to a rich variety of reading materials early on as she browsed through her grandparents’, grand aunt’s and parents’ collection.

As a classroom teacher, she makes sure her pupils enjoy leisurely reading during their free time and she would regularly include literature to keep the students engaged and motivated.

35th National Children's Book Day

A part of Teacher Marose's collection is currently displayed at the PLV University Library. She will also be holding an Engaged Reading Program in time for the National Children's Book Day with 30 Educations Students on the 28th of July.
