Reading Icon for October - November 2019: Atty. Arnel Jose S. Bañas of Barangay Marulas, Valenzuela City
Welcome our Reading Icon for the months of October and November 2019 - Atty. Arnel Jose S. Bañas. Atty. Arnel, who hails from Barangay Marulas, was awarded the Gawad Pio Valenzuela for Excellence in Government Service in 2009.
Atty. Arnel Jose S. Bañas is the Deputy Secretary for Administration and Finance of the Senate of the Philippines since 1998. Because of his outstanding contribution to public governance, he became the recipient of the Gawad Pio Valenzuela Award for Excellence in Government Service in 2009.
Atty. Bañas is the president of the Hubert H. Humphrey Alumni Philippines since 2015 and is on his third consecutive term. He had his Humphrey Fellowship (Human Resource Management) at the University of Washington in 2007-2008. Moreover, he is also a past President of Kythe Foundation, Inc. a non-profit, non-stock organization aimed towards improving the quality of life among children with cancer and other chronic illnesses.
Hailing from Marulas, Atty. Bañas began his education in Constantino Elementary School. He eventually graduated from the University of the Philippines Asian Institute of Tourism and studied Law at the Ateneo De Manila University. he earned his Master of Laws at the University of Warwick, England as a British Chevening Scholar.
Our Reading Icon is an advocate of the environment, human rights and sustainable tourism. On a personal note, he is a foodie, an intuitive cook, as well as somebody who loves to travel and who enjoys movies. Atty. Bañas is also into swimming and used to be a long-distance runner.

In celebration of Dr. Pio Valenzuela's 150th birth anniversary, the Reading Icon Book Sharing Program of PLV Library will be featuring successful Valenzuelanos who are awarded with the Dr. Pio Valenzuela Awards. Gawad Pio Valenzuela is the highest and most prestigious distinction given by Valenzuela City to exceptional Valenzuelanos who excel in their respective fields and lived true to the values of the hero, Dr. Pio Valenzuela.
