Art Academician / Advocacy Filmmaker / Artiste Multidisciplinaire
Gawad Dr. Pio Valenzuela Awardee for 2019 (Film)
He completed his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at the University of
the East, major in Advertising Arts. He studied filmmaking at the Asian Film
Academy in Busan, South Korea in 2007. His artistic practice is more
focused on raising consciousness and creating space for dialogue on communal
issues, the responsible transformation of society, and creative activation
through contemporary art.
Legaspi’s achievements gained more importance when he represented
the Philippines in major festivals and won the Miglior Montaggio award in San
Gio, Italy. His films were officially selected in more than 150 International
Film Festivals. He received the prestigious UNESCO Laureate artist recognition
in 2013 and eventually becoming a resident artist of the Università delle Idee
– Italy which he also won the ILLY DESIGN PRIZE – Art for Social Change.

A two-time Gawad Cultural Center of the Philippines for
Alternative Film and Video awardee, 62nd Carlos Palanca Awards
for Literature winner in 2012, Gawad Urian nominee in 2013 and 2015, National
Commission for Culture and the Arts Competitive Grant winner 2009 and 2012,
Cinemalaya and Cinema One Film Festivals Jury Prize in 2009 and 2012,
International Photography Awards (IPA) 2017 – Silver Prize winner for moving
images and the Film Development Council of the Philippines acknowledged Legaspi
as one of Philippine Film Ambassadors of 2017 for winning in Kingston, Jamaica.
Legaspi was the first Filipino artist featured in a retrospective
of Monsoon Asia Film Festival 2016 in Taiwan; he was also invited to different
art shows in major alternative galleries and exhibition spaces in Italy,
Germany, and Taiwan. His films about migration and integration of memories were
exhibited at the Arte AL Centro in 2013, Cittadellarte – Fondazione Pistoletto,
Italy 2015, PeninsulaLab Wollinerstrasse, Berlin 2015, Sianguang Workstation,
Taiwan 2017, UNICEF – 3 United Nations, New York and Instituto Italiano de
Cultura ” – Alianza Francesa de Buenos Aires, 2017. In 2018, he received the
prestigious Taiwan Emerald Initiative Grant for South-East Asian art
visionaries.
